China, officially the People's Republic of China (Code: CHN), is a country in East Asia and is a single party country, with real power lying with the Chinese Communist party. China population in 2024 is estimated to be 1.408 Billion, is the second largest population in the world with growth rate 0.58%, Covering an area of 9.6 million sq. km is the largest of all Asian countries with 7.1% of land mass. Its last census conducted in 2010 and its growth from 2000 to 2010 was 5.8%. China demographics are 145 people per sq. km. Located in East Asia and has the greatest contrast in temperature between its northern and southern borders. Beijing is the capital and Shanghai is the most populated city in China and third populous city in the world. China is the largest of all Asian countries, Occupying nearly the entire East Asian landmass, it covers approximately one-fourteenth of the land area of Earth. Among the major countries of the world, China is surpassed in area by only Russia and Canada, and it is almost as large as the whole of Europe. China has the greatest contrast in temperature between its southern and northern borders of any country in the world. The great majority of the population is Chinese (Han), and thus China is characterised as an ethnically homogeneous country, but only few countries have a variety of indigenous peoples. China civilization having more than 5,000 years of history is culturally flourished in the ancient world. The population of China is so enormous, Many of the cities and towns are high in population density, but some of the areas are either uninhabited or sparsely populated. It borders 13 countries, Mongolia to the north, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Vietnam and Laos to the south, Russia and North Korea to the north-east,Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to the west. China has a long border of 5,500 km (3,400 miles) from north to south, 5,250 km (3,250 miles) from east to west and its coastline has approximately of 14,000 km (8,700 miles).

Chinese people eat all animals meat, Rice and Noodles are the major staple foods, and Tofu, Eggs and vegetables are the general types and second most fundamental part of Chinese cuisine, after rice. People of China follow several traditional festivals celebrated all over the country and the most important is Chinese New Year and Mid-Autumn Festival. Stringent population controls have been in place for the several decades limit to one child policy. With 140 million people, China today remains the second most populous country in the world, and the fertility rate is decreasing with slower birth rate, According to South China Morning Post, The expected number of births in 2023 is estimated to be around 7 million to 8 million compared to 9.56 million births in 2022, down from 30 million births in 1963, 25 million in 1987 and 17 million in 2017. Since from 1961, China's population shrank by 850,000 people in 2022. China's aged population of over 65 is 15% that is about 209.78 million in 2022, by 2035 some 400 million will be in above 60 years of age which will be around 30% of the population, longer life expectancy and a declining fertility rate are creating a rapidly ageing society.

In 2023 India picked up the most populous title, for the past few years due to it shares borders with 13 countries, China is rapidly redrawing border demographics with the population changes, These changes may drive economic and social dynamics or it may be gathering crisis from neighbourhoods. Over 50% of the Chinese population is involved in agriculture and it is the leading occupation, China has larger Coal and Iron mining and the largest mines are at Anshan and Benxi, in Liaoning province. Shanghai and Guangzhou are the traditionally great textile centers from the last century, Before the year 1945, heavy industry was concentrated in the Manchuria of northeast, but important industry sectors were subsequently established in other cities. In addition to Han majority, China officially recognises 55 ethnic minority groups and it is comprised of 8.49% of the mainland China. The Non-Chinese minorities are Zhuang, Thai speaking East Asian ethnic group who mostly live in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the Uighurs, who live mainly in Xinjiang, the Hui minority of muslim religion found in Ningxia, Tibetans are the ethnic group native to Tibet Autonomous Region, Yi (Lolo), who live on the borders of Sichuan and Yunnan, the Miao, minority ethnic group living in southern China, the Mongols who live in the Mongolian steppes and the Koreans, who are concentrated in Manchuria.

Religions in China

The main religions in China are Buddhism, Chinese folk religions, Taoism and Confucianism. China has world largest Buddhist population of 200 to 250 million, and Folk religions are the blend practices of Buddhism and Taoism. Taoism or Daoism is a philosophical religion of Chinese tradition which emphasis living in harmony by Tao. Confucianism developed from the thoughts and teachings of the Chinese philosopher Confucius, Confucianism developed in response to Buddhism and Taoism.

According to the 2020 census, 91.11% of the population was Han Chinese, and 8.89% were minorities.

Population Projection

China's population reached 1 billion in 1982. China nearly doubled in population from 540 million in 1949 to 969 million in 1979. The China fertility rate in 1950 is 5.29 and by 1965 it is increased to 6.02, by 1970 it is 5.75, by 1975 it is decreased to 3.58, by 1990 it is further decreased to 2.43, by 1995 it is slowed down to 1.68, and by 2000 and 2005 fertility rate stood between 1.45 and 1.51. From 2015 to 2020 fertility rate is decreased from 1.41 to 1.3. China's population growth rate is only 0.59%, This growth slowed because of the one-child policy instituted in 1979. by the fifth census in 2000, the Chinese population had more than doubled, reaching 1.2 billion By the sixth census in 2010, the total population of China had reached to 1,37. Life expectancy in China by 1950 is 43.8, by 1980 it is increased to 67.8, in 1990 it is 69.7, thereby in 2000 it is 73.1 and by 2015 it is increased to 75.7.

China was ranked 72nd position among the list of 156 countries which were included in the World Happiness Index. China population in 2020 is estimated to be 1.40 Billion, China Life expectancy is 75.4 years which is 48th position of life expectancy rank, Well being is 76th rank and Inequality being 51st Rank out of 156. China health and education is vastly improved for the last 50 years due to their socioeconomic reforms and the 95% of the population has access to health and education.
