Chicago is the most populous state of Illinois state of United States of America. Chicago remains the third largest city in the U.S, behind New York and Los Angeles. The Chicago has one of the world's largest and most diversified economies. Chicago population in 2025 is estimated to be 2.711 million with an area of 227.63 square miles (589.56 sq km). The Chicago area has one of the highest gross domestic products (GDP) in the world, census data show the Chicago city lost population for the fourth consecutive year from 2015 to 2019. Chicago was first explored in 1673 by the French explorers and in 1833 and Chicago was incorporated as a town and city in 1837. The median household income is $55,198, employment rate is 60.7% and poverty rate is 19.5%.

The Greater Chicago or Chicago metropolitan area, commonly referred as Chicagoland or Chicagoland. The Chicago area (Chicago-Naperville, IL-IN-WI CSA) is the third largest metropolitan area in the United States. The Chicago-Naperville CSA consists regions of Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, Kankakee(Illinois) and Michigan City-La Porte(Indiana). The Chicago-Naperville-Elgin consists of Cook County, DeKalb County, DuPage County, Grundy County, Kankakee County, Kane County, Kendall County, McHenry County and Will County.

Chicago is the third largest city in the United states by rank, According to US Population Census, April 1, 2020, Chicago population in 2020 is expected to be 2.74 Million, According to 2018 U.S Census estimates, 6.5% of Chicago population are under 5 years, 78.8% are above 18 years and older, 12% are 65 years and older people. Civilian Veterans are 71,067, Veterans by Sex in Chicago city are 92.1% are Male and 7.9% are Female. The population of below 5 years is 1,75,962, 18 years and above are 21,41,930, 65 years and over are 3,26,982. 71,067 are Veterans. Chicago population in 2023 is estimated to be 2.704 million, population in 2022 is estimated to be 2.701 million, and in 2021 is expected to be 2.69 million.

The distinct urban areas of Aurora, Joliet, Elgin and Waukegan were absorbed into the Chicago UA. According to the United Nations Urban Agglomeration Prospects report, Chicago UA population in 2020 is 8,861,640 (8.86 Million) with covering an area of 10,856 square miles (28,120 sq km) that includes 14 counties in the U.S. states of Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin.

U.S Census 2018 population according to Race are, 1,344,088 are White Americans, followed by 818,875 Black or African American, 8,158 are American Indian and Alaska Native out of these 694 are Cherokee tribals, 532 are Chippewa tribals, 60 are Navajo ad 106 Sioux tribal people.

Total Asian population is 175,109, out of these 38,870 are Asian Indians, 56,676 are Chinese, 30,973 are Filipino, 4,341 Japanese, 12,092 Korean, 9,628 Vietnamese and 22,529 are Other Asian nationals.
