Niger is a landlocked country in West Africa, borders Chad to the east, Nigeria to the south, Benin and Burkina Faso to the southwest, Mali to the west, Algeria to the northwest and Libya to the northeast. Niger is the islamic country with ninety-nine percent of population, Eighty percent of its land is in Sahara desert and country named after the Niger River, gained independence in 1960 from France. According to 2006 census stats, Niger population by ethnic groups are 53.1 percent are Hausa and are largest linguistic group, 21.2 percent are Zarma & Songhay(Songhai), 11.0 percent are Tuareg or Tamashek, 6.5 percent are Fulani or Fula, 5.9 percent are Kanuri, 0.8 percent are Gurma, 0.4 percent are Toubou, 0.4 percent are Arab and 0.9 percent are others.
